Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowie, Maryland is seeking an Organist/Choir Director for our Sunday morning 8:30 am liturgical service and our mid-week Wednesday evening 7:15 pm service.  Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is an heir to the rich tradition of Lutheran sacred music and considers the roles of organist and choir director essential to its worship and identity. The person selected for position of Organist/Choir Director will be expected to assist the Pastor, the Board of Worship, the Praise Band Leader, other church musicians and lay people in planning and implementing the church's music program.   The ideal candidate for the Organist/Choir Director position will demonstrate a high level of technical skill on both the organ and piano, will have the ability to direct a small adult choir, and will be sensitive to Lutheran (LCMS) theology and worship customs.   The ability to teach hand bells and lead a small hand bell choir is considered a plus.  Trinity's formal choir season runs from September until mid-June.  During this time, the Organist/Choir Director will lead mid-week rehearsal, as well as warm-up rehearsal on Sunday mornings prior to the 8:30 am service.   During the summer, there is a Sunday morning choir, where members arrive early on Sunday morning and rehearse the selected anthem prior to the beginning of the 8:30 am service.    The Organist/Choir Director will also be responsible for the music and choir's participation in special services, to include the  Wednesday evening Advent services, one of the two Christmas Eve services, one service on Christmas Day, Wednesday evening Ash Wednesday and Lenten services, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday services, and Wednesday evening Thanksgiving Eve service.  The Organist/Choir Director will also be expected to plan and direct two Special Music programs—one for Easter and one for Christmas, as well as assist with and accompany the Children's Sunday School Christmas program, including rehearsals.    The Organist/Choir Director will help plan the music budget, be expected to select and purchase music as appropriate and within budget, and manage the existing music library.   The Organist/Choir Director will have the first right of refusal to play for all weddings, memorial services, funerals, and other private events, as appropriate.    Interested applicants are invited to send a resume and cover letter to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Attention: Rick Wesenberg, 6600 Laurel-Bowie Road, Bowie, MD 20715, by 31 December 2017, as interviews and auditions are planned for January 2018. Job Qualifications:

Bachelor‘s Degree in Music (strongly preferred)   Minimum of 3-5 years experience   Experience and proficiency in playing choral and sacred music in a traditional liturgical setting (Lutheran or similar)   Working knowledge of the liturgical calendar and applicability to musical selections   Proficient in selecting appropriate music for the choir as well as preludes, postludes and music during offertory   Proficient in organ and piano accompaniment while conducting an Adult choir of about 12 volunteer members   Ability to teach hand bells and lead small hand bell choir is a plus   Ability to work with Pastor, the Board of Worship, the Praise Band Leader, other church musicians, and lay people to plan worship services   Ability to oversee the Music Library, including all materials and instruments   Participate in preparing the annual budget for the music program.
