Job Description:
St. John's U.C.C. seeks a part-time (30hr) Director of Music to lead a dynamic program of music activities. The successful candidate will be adept in traditional and contemporary worship, relate to a variety of ages, able to work in a team, possess the ability to grow our music program, and sees music in the life of the church as an act of worship. A music related degree is required as well as organ and keyboard expertise.
REQUIREMENTS:
A Christian with a heart for worshipping God.
Ability to collaborate and be a team player.
A degree in music education or sacred music.
Ability to direct musical groups for all ages in our church such as choirs, hand bells/chimes, praise teams, bands and ensembles.
Knowledge of children's voices, changing voices and adult voices.
Ability to play both the organ and piano and plan the musical portion of worship services.
An understanding of the liturgical year and associated traditional and contemporary music.
Ability to encourage the musical gifts of others and recruit new members of all ages into the various musical groups especially those involving our children and youth.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, develop, coordinate, and administer a Music Ministry in partnership with the Pastor and Worship Ministries.
Develop an annual budget for the overall Church Music Ministry.
Implement the stated approved objectives of the Music Ministry. (See attachment)
Recommend and offer music appropriate for the liturgical year, traditional sacred and contemporary praise, for the various Church musical groups.
Provide leadership to and supervision of volunteer music leaders.
WEEKLY DUTIES:
Consult with pastor, Praise Team Coordinator and Contemporary Worship Coordinator on music selections for respective individual worship services.
Play the organ and keyboard for traditional worship services.
Participate in contemporary worship services.
Schedule and lead rehearsal of adult choir (typically Sept-May) and participate in St. John's praise team rehearsal.
Schedule and arrange for special music presentations during worship services, i.e., vocal and/or instrumental, if any.
OCCASIONAL DUTIES:
Arrange for special music (e.g., soloists, duets, guests, etc.) during the summer weeks (typically June-August).
Consult with the pastor on appropriate music selection and planning of:
o Special "Worship" services, (Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.)
o Other special services (weddings, funerals, etc.) and with the Pastor meet with appropriate persons to discuss musical presentations and selections.
o Other Church related events that may include a musical component.
Plan, organize and oversee special musical events such as guest musicians, vocalists, choirs, hand bells/chimes, etc.
