DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES Part-time, leading to full-time St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Defiance, Ohio, July, 2016 _____________________________________________________________________ St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Defiance, Ohio is seeking a Director of Music to contribute to the congregation's spiritual development by providing a meaningful worship experience through the use of high quality and diverse music styles. The ideal candidate for this position will be a team player, serving in partnership with others to assist persons in becoming disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our congregation loves music and singing and is looking for an energetic leader who can inspire and equip people of all ages and backgrounds to join in song. This person will be equipped in leading classic traditional and modern contemporary worship, and in moving toward a convergence of these styles. Our hope is for worship to be for persons of all ages, and to be a source of outreach to those in the community not connected to a worshiping community.
Specific responsibilities would include being song / worship leader at both our 8:45 and 11:00 services; directing our adult chancel choir at 11:00 from September – May; and developing, growing and leading a worship band. If enough persons are interested, our hope is also to reinvigorate our children's, youth and bell choirs. The ideal candidate will have a quality voice appropriate for a song leader, skills in conducting, and keyboard and/or guitar skills. (ability to play the pipe organ, while not required, will be considered a plus and be a means for additional compensation for weddings, funerals, subbing, etc.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PART-TIME DIRECTOR OF MUSIC: The desire and ability to make disciples in one's area of ministry. Recruit, equip, and empower/train laity to do the ministry God has called them to do. Under the supervision of the Pastor, the director will consult and work collaboratively with the Pastor, Worship committee, other Church staff, and volunteers in creating a comprehensive music program that complements, supports, and enhances the mission of the Church. Provides musical accompaniment on piano and/or organ or guitar at Sunday worship services and other major celebrations. Participates in the creative worship planning, hymn / song selection, and special music selections for our two Sunday worship services (convergent) with the Pastor and/or other designated personnel including special worship services for Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, mid-week Advent and Lenten services, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, and other celebration services. Schedules and directs all vocal and instrumental groups in rehearsals needed to adequately prepare for regular participation in Sunday worship services during the months of September - May. Directs, rehearses with, and accompanies vocalists and instrumentalists providing special music for services as needed. Arranges for and schedules appropriate special music for worship services during the months of June, July, and August. Assists the Pastor with the selection of special music appropriate to the church season, scripture, and overall theme for the worship service. Attends regular scheduled staff meetings. Attends regular scheduled Worship & Music Committee meetings and is a non-voting member of the Committee. Oversees the development and maintenance of the music library, materials, supplies, musical instruments, and other equipment used in the music ministry. Responsible for compliance and reporting requirements of the Church's annual copyright license. Serves as a musical resource and is available to work with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School music program as requested or needed. Serves as a music resource consultant that strives to develop and grow the congregation's understanding and appreciation of the role and use of music in worship and to celebrate liturgies of quality in order to provide, improve, and enhance a meaningful worship experience for all worship service attendees. Nurtures and grows the music ministry, with an emphasis on increased opportunities for our children, young adults, and families to be involved in Emmanuel's music ministry. Encourages and mentors children, youth, and adults who wish to use their musical skills to enhance worship. Actively recruits new members to all adult/youth vocal, instrumental groups, ensembles, and praise band musicians while providing an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.
