Colgate University, a highly-selective residential liberal arts university located in the picturesque central New York village of Hamilton, announces its search for an Associate University Chaplain and Protestant Campus Minister. Considered one of the nation's most beautiful campuses, Colgate takes pride in the active engagement of its students and faculty in local, national and global communities. With an enrollment of approximately 2,850 undergraduates, Colgate offers 53 possible majors to its students.
The associate university chaplain and Protestant campus minister is a full-time, 12-month position committed to providing for the spiritual needs of the Colgate community. The position reports to the university chaplain and is a member of the dean of the college division. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2015.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Pastoral:
- Providing expertise and pastoral leadership in the Protestant tradition. This will include but is not limited to coordinating and leading worship weekly during the term as well as holiday and seasonal observances.
- Being available for other liturgical/sacramental needs, particularly baptisms and weddings.
- Supervising student worship leaders, church musician, and worship band.
- Planning worship services (including regular Eucharist) which connect to a broad range of Protestant Christians.
- Providing pastoral counsel to members of the university community. Providing instruction and engagement focused on reconciling Christian beliefs with academic learning.
- Assisting students with making the connection between their faith, their commitment to justice, and to service to the broader community and world.
- Working with student leaders and chaplaincy staff to sustain a vision for Protestant life on campus.

Programmatic:
- Developing and executing programs focused on growing a vibrant Protestant religious community. In collaboration with chaplaincy staff and students, determining and addressing programmatic needs regarding education and formation events.
- Serving as a source of religious information to the broader community.
- Helping to lead the Chaplaincy's interfaith pilgrimage and travel programs
- Working to sustain unity and cooperation within and among diverse Christian student groups and faculty.
- Helping students strategize about how to best reach out to underserved populations and how to grow the Protestant community in numbers and depth.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

- M.Div. or comparable degree.
- Ordination and/or authority to celebrate baptism and communion in one's denomination.
- Ability to minister to and counsel a wide range of students including students from mainline, evangelical, Pentecostal, and historically black church traditions.
- Strong oral, public and written communication skills.
- One (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent required.
- Demonstrated commitment to and skill in fostering community and collaboration among diverse constituencies.
- Experience creating and implementing short and long-term plans in an ecumenical and interfaith context.
- Ability to work collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis in a highly collaborative environment.
- Substantial and successful prior ministry experience; prior campus ministry experience strongly preferred.

Sample #1 should be a one (1) page reflection that demonstrates the applicant's ability to minister and counsel a wide range of students including students from mainline, evangelical, Pentecostal, and historically black church traditions. Sample #2 should be a document of 1,000 words or less of a pastoral reflection/sermon on a New Testament text.
