Marcy, many times the church leadership can provide a direction. Sit down with the Pastors and have a frank and honest discussion. You will probably get into some ground that is not covered very often in reflecting on just what a worship team should project.
I've worked with Pastors who would wince if a bad note was hit and Pastors who wouldn't even know it. Bottom line....you need to be in agreement with the Holy Spirit and your Pastors. This is a great opportunity for you to deepen your church realationships, to stretch and grow.
Excellence to me always seems exclusive and that is definitely not what God is all about. We should strive to please our Father and be a help to our brothers and sisters. You, as the leader have been given charge of the artistic part of the flock, not an easy assignment.
You must be 'transparent' and honest and expect the same from your team members. Exellence too often accompanies ego and if you want to quench the Spirit that will do it.
The very nature of Worship is humility and dependence. We need God, He is our source for all things. As you and your team demonstrate that dependance through song your attitude of love and desire for more of the Lord will create an atmosphere that can take the congregation deeper than just appreciating skillful playing and singing. Much like the illustration of the potter and the clay consider yourself the instrument and the Holy Spirit the breath that will create the sound. A sound that will resonate with the peoples' spirit's and break through to their hearts allowing God to heal and love on His kids a couple of times a week.
Your 'job' is to be a worshiper first and foremost...then take that and mentor your team and together teach the congregation how to relate to their heavenly Father and Lord.
Lean not on your own understanding, His ways are not our ways, seek His kingdom first, be anxious for nothing, His hand is strong upon you for this work.
He is worthy of our praise.
Blessings in Jesus Christ
-J
