I think there needs to be a balance of 'traditional' and 'contemporary' styles when it comes to the music portion of a worship service. The terms traditional and contemporary are relative, and often just thrown around. When we say traditional music, the first thing that comes to mind is organ/piano driven hymns. Contemporary is thought of as either acoustic guitar driven, or 'that loud stuff these kids are listening to these days'. Now, I say the terms are relative because back when a lot of the 'traditional' songs were written, they were very much contemporary. Just as today's contemporary music will be considered traditional 250 years from now. People tend to think of contemporary as being worldly, but it's just different. I believe we need the hymns of the church to help preserve our history, and the testimonies of our ancestors. I believe we also need to combine these great hymns with the newer music of today. The idea of seperate services based solely on music style is ridiculous. This doesn't convey the unity in the body of Christ, nor does it cultivate a sense of community within the body. Jesus said that the world would recognize us as His disciples by our love for one another(John 13:34-35). How can we truly portray that sincere Christian love if we can't agree on music? The younger generation won't learn from the older generation if they are in two seperate services. The opposite is also true. The older generation has much to learn about the younger. In fact, I don't think it's possible to teach someone effectively unless you understand how to first reach them.
There are times to sing for joy and shout aloud to God(Psalms 81:1, 95:1), and times to be still and enjoy the peace of God. What we should be focusing on, is whether or not the music we use is bible-based. The hymns aren't any more 'biblical' than the new songs. In fact, Psalms 33:3 (KJV) says this: Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
To split the body over music, is unbiblical. To refuse to sing a new song, is unbiblical. Remember who worship is for. It's not for our benefit; we can't have the attitude of 'getting something out of it'. We need to have the attitude of, 'What can I put into it?'
