Dan,The buzz you're talking about could be 60-cycle hum (power noise). A simple ground-lift (could be dangerous to the PC or Edirol if you get a power jolt) can be used to test this theory.
Another issue is how you're connecting your gear. If you're using unbalanced to balanced or line inputs, you could also be introducing a signal that is too weak (mic level) into a line level device, hence the low volume recording.
The Edirol is a neat playback unit, but not ideally suited for replicating a true video switcher. I'm curious how you've got it all set up, since it's really more of a presentation unit.
If you have a signal flow diagram for your setup, please post it online so we can all have a look at it and help you troubleshoot.
