Ch 1-8 layer one, CH 2-16 layer two, etc. It helped them keep the costs down and the board small. So, there are few dedicated knobs. You must navigate your way around the console, instead of reaching and grabbing a fader or a knob. The size of your room has little to do with mic preamp gain. If you have little mic pre gain, then you may have issues getting mic signals strong enough before they are sampled in the analog to digital convertor. If you sample a low-level signal, you get a low-bit, high noise sample, which means it will sound like fuzzy garbage. This has to do with understanding digital audio. This console works completely different from an analog console.
