Re: Mic's for Recording
Hi Rob,Selecting the right microphone depends on many factors such as acoustic power handling, transient response, directional characteristics, tonal character, sensitivity etc. The importance of each will depend upon what you are trying to do.Specific instruments are best recorded with a certain type of mic. EG: A large diapragm dynamic is often used with a kick drum because it is able to handle the high SPL's from the drum, while a condenser mic is often used with cymbals due to it's excellent transient response. (If you were to swap the two mic's around neither would perform well because they are not suited for that role)Depending on the venue and the recording setup, the directional characteristics of your microphone may be important. Nearby instruments or vocals can bleed into nearby microphones - simply repositioning a mic may not provide the isolation you require.I recommend that you get a copy of the booklet 'Microphone Techniques for Recording' from the Shure website and spend some time reading through it.
