Hi Phil, I also recently (2-3 years ago)started playing guitar at my church and feel we are in very similar situations. I use a Boss GT6 effects unit with an old Fender reverb tube amp (about 22 wrms output). A tremendous help has been having recordings of upcoming music in MP3 format on my home computer that can be slowed down without changing the pitch. This can be done by a number of music programs (I use SoundForge). Another method is to use a ToneWorks Pandoras Box PX4, a litte gadget that will do the same thing. I'm no wiz at figuring out lead runs, but using the PX4 or SoundForge has been a tremendous help. Our sound team prefers to mike the guitar amp but I can't tell the difference. Recording our practices helps me to critique myself more objectively since playing isn't distracting me during playback. What I learned from listening to our practices: 1. I need more treble on the guitar and, 2.(This goes for the whole band) Not playing every note sounds much better than overplaying. Hope this helps. John
