Hey! that's awesome that you are humble enough to ask for advice! That is an awesome heart of a worshiper already... You didn't specify what instrument you play or whether your a vocalist too, but my backround is in guitar. I play electric, acoustic, bass (when needed), and leading monthly. Our church is really growing in explosive dynamic worship.
Assuming your coming from a similar backround (if not maybe this will still apply), Listen! Listen to what kind of music your church plays. If they do a lot of Hillsong stuff, then get a hold of the Hillsong cds and learn your parts! You can change them later to what you want to play but having the foundation of knowing what to play (unless your awesome at improve and can transpose keys in your head), will help you in your audition and whenever (assuming you make it) your part is vital to the song. A lot of the hillsong parts have vital roles from the musicians especially the guitarists.
Also be sinsitive to the crowd; your mentallity should be, how can I help these people connect with God. If most of them come from the rock era, a melodic solo can toatally help by making them comfortable with the music they listen already. If most of them are into more modern music, play accordingly. As a guitarist, short melodies or little licks really add a lot.
Also be sesitive to the song. Dynamics are a huge role. If your an electric guitarist, have a nice smooth rythm distortion and a solo one with some delay and reverb. If your an acoustic player, make sure you can come from your strumming down to finger or hybrid picking without losing tempo for those intimate or quieter moments. Messing up in a worship setting is not a sin, but can distract people's focus on God. It's important to know your part(s); Whether you have to practice them everyday or just at practice. Know yourself and how you learn best.
(hope you're not overloaded yet)
You are probably aware of the percent rule; If they have you try out with the existing band, then be sure you blend and don't come off as a virtue-oso-sp? It can come off as pride and you don't want to give that impression. Blend in even if they can't here your part above the others. Remember, you are serving.
Also don't be nervous. Know that God has a calling on your life and that He will lead you to where He wants you to serve. If you don't make it, don't be discouraged. Do everything you can to get better. Watch Hillsong church DVDs and listen, listen, listen! Even if you do make it, never stop listening. You learn a lot more than you think. The Holy spirit will lead you and whisper to you secrets of your instrument. He's the author of music. There's music in heaven-how awesome that we've been blessed with eternal giftings!!
If you have any more questions or run into a guitarist(particularly in the church band) or just want to talk, my email is calebtruj@hotmail.com

in Him,

caleb
