video copyright
According to copyright law churches should not show any commercial videos without the permission of the producer. A license can be purchased through CCLI that will allow churches to legally view many (but not all) commercial videos. In addition, a license should be obtained when Churches make videos of their choirs, praise teams, praise dancers, etc., singing or dancing to copy written protected music. Again, a license can be obtained from CCLI for videoing some, but not all, copy written protected music.

Christian and secular artists?
The church often overlooks creative people and artists. A way to send the message "the church cares for vision and artistry" is to go through appropriate channels. Especially for Christian artists and musicians alot of them have stopped the career angle for ministry in the arts and music. It is the livlihood for them and their family. The vision is for revival and claiming quality arts and music for Christ. The secular artist may be searching and a way of caring is to respect the "lost" vision until he/she is won for Christ and the battle of claiming the arts & letters for Christ war is won. I am writing as a creative person who has seen firsthand the church officers take creativity for granted. We should not; we should want too nourish and nurture "artsy" people in the love of Christ. There are conservative, heterosexual, family Christians out there who want too perform and create for enjoyment and growth. Lets respect that.

Need to look at "Fair Use"
You need to also look at the practice of "Fair Use." The best web site for this is http://fairuse.stanford.edu On this web site they state "fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and "transformative" purpose such as to comment upon, criticize or parody a copyrighted work." There is no clear definition of what is "Fair Use" but they give good criteria for determining it and court cases that have been fought over it. Most uses of video in church services, where a small portion of a video is shown, is done in a transformative nature, for an educational purpose, or is meant to criticize the secular nature of what is shown in a video. Showing a small section of a video does not detract or 'steal' from the copyright creator just like quoting a small section of text from a book. CCLI is meant to correctly cover the fees associated with the income that the copyright owner receives from people viewing their movies, but it should not be confused with the appropriate use of materials for educational purposes.

This Is Great!
I thank God for such articles and believe they are calling the church to a higher level of integrity. Ministries should take this as a clarion call for intergrity in all our efforts. Lack of knowledge is no longer an excuse. Even God condemns lack of knowledge as an excuse for not obeying His laws. The church of God is rising up. This is wonderful evidence of that.
