No Percussionist/Progressive Worship
Laverne,My name is Andy Hutchison. I am the Worship Pastor at New River Fellowship in Hudson Oaks, Texas. (Ft. Worth/Dallas suburb) First contemporary worship starts in the heart. Just singing a new song to the Lord. Becoming a life worshipper before becoming a platform worshipper. The Lord has anointed us as worshippers already. I do not believe in a worship style myself. I believe that we use different music styles as tools. I say this to get things off on the right foot. I would like to pose some questions: 1. What is your current instrumentation on the platform? (i.e. guitar, piano, organ, singers, etc.) 2. How large is the worship center that you are currently meeting in? 3. How are the acoustics? (Is it a live room or a dead room.) 4. What is the population base in your town and are you near a metropolitan area? If you would like go ahead and answer these. Below are some pre-conceived ideas. 1. Use a pre-recorded drum loop with your celebrative music, and some of your praise/worship music. The drum loop gives a even tempo and can usually stay constant throughout the song. The tempo is fast to medium fast in these situations. These are songs usually used in the first part of the service before entereing into the intimate worship time with the Father. 2. Start with congas, djimbae, bongos, or other percussion instruments before moving to a full set of drums. A beginner can play simple patterns and maintain the groove relatively well. This person can also continue in the percussionist position after you secure your drummer in the future. I believe that the percussionists position is very, very important. All the cymbal swells, chimes, shakers, etc. that round off the edges and transitions in a song come from that position. Again, a simple set of inexpensive congas and a self help video can immediately bring a beginner (that has natural rhythm) into the worship team. 3. All of the above ideas are far behind the priority of worshipping in spirit and in truth. The people you include in your team are leaders. They fall under the same qualifications as your elders or deacons. You/They are leading the body to the secret place, to the throne room of the most high. You want people who have been there. It is so easy to position people because you need them to fill a hole in your progressive scheme. I urge you to be on guard for your body and protect them. I hope some of this helps. There is a huge need to move with the fresh move of our Lord. To humble ourselves enough to do it his way is a huge challenge with our Artist temperaments. Some books I recommend: Worship Evangelism Sally Morgenthaler Heart Of The Artist Rory Noland/Willow Creek Community Church Fresh Wind Fresh Fire Jim Cymbala The Lord Bless You, Andy Hutchison/Worship Pastor New River Fellowship

I agree!
I think that as you did many of us that lead worship services tend to go through the same thing! WE feel so tense and sometimes hurt, when in spite of our efforts the congregation seems to not react. But God is sooo good. He lets us know what the problem is... not the congregation but ourselves!!!! How can a person who does not worship expect to lead others to worship? Don't get me wrong... I was a true worshipper... but, I was letting the focus of my worship be the church and not God. I wanted them to worship and thus not concentrating in worshipping Him myself. That is a definite no-no. Praise the Lord that things are now different. As leader, I want all to enter into the Holy of Holies and bow before His presence and esperience His touch and even smell... but now i concentrate more on being in that special place and touching His throne and heart with my praise!! Then all others follow!!

How can I get a hold of you?
Thank you so much for you sincerity about worship and your ability to address the issues that face us worship leaders every day. We are in a new move of the Lord and have started a brand new church. I am the worship leader seeking God's direction on how to structure a worship ministry. I have a wonderful team, staff, and church body that is ready, willing, and able to move into deeper worship. I would not normally ask, but I feel directed...Would you be willing to come and speak to us about worship? If that is not possible, can you direct me to resources that can help me build a well-rounded music ministry handbook? I have many more questions, and would appreciate any expertise you are able to give. I don't want to monopolize your time, nor do I want to take your ideas, but I sense that our hearts are in the same place and I am interested to see if this a step God would have me take. Many thanks, Rory Cookman

You're Right!
You are right about worship begins with you. When I lead praise and worship, I make sure that God gets all the glory. I try to concentrate on my worship and how wonderful, and great he is and I noticed that others began to get lost in worship as a result.

helpful!!
This is so helpful to me. I am in a church choir and praise team and it is very easy to get off track. I now am going to be a part of a praise team workshop and this article had immensly helped me not only to teach in the workshop about leading in worship, but also to aid me in my worship as well - Thanks so much for this!
