Reponsible Levels
I agree with the article in its entirety. As a FOH operator it is our responsibility to help control the environment. We target 80 - 82dBA (slow) as peak levels in our worship. It is true that 1800+ worshippers can reach louder levels for short periods of time. It is not necessary to "out do" the congregation for those short periods of time.

Another question is "How much sound does my room hold before intelligibility suffers?" At some point, reflected sound energy interferes with projected sound energy. Loud without being able to understand what is being said or sung is just loud.

Music levels or spoken word
I would agree with your assesment of SPLs if you are refering only to the spoken word. If you are in a Worship setting with people singing. Then your ambiant room noise increases to about 80-85 db. In fact measuring in with the people, I have measured 90-95 db just from people singing. The main house system needs to be at least as loud as the people singing, don't you think?
