Good communication is key!
Good communication between the worship team and the sound tech is critical...just as you pointed out. I have been blessed with a great group of musicians who treat me as if I'm one of them. I know that sounds crazy to some...but others may realize that it is not always so. One of our worship leaders has a habit of asking what I need from him and how he can help me to do my job! Wow! I was dumbfounded the first time that happened. Another sends me cards of thanks and often says to me..."You ROCK!" They are also very patient to work with me when we have new equipment or want to try new ways of doing things. All of these revisions are worked out together. I'm even given a written order of worship, complete with the names of those responsible for each part of the service and the approximate times when each transition will occur. I like this type of communication tool. It is helpful because there are fewer surprises and I am prepared ahead of time. What more could I ask for? I'm staying! I love my volunteer job and the people I work with are awesome!

God Bless you for this article!!
I pray that worship leaders will read this and God will impress upon them points to take to heart. I am a sound tech in a church whose attendance and media needs are growing by leaps and bounds (praise God!) We are putting in a bigger, better sound system to accomodate the changes, and there are a lot of control issues and anxiety surrounding the new technology. Just today I was talking with a fellow sound tech how communication and trust are the keys to getting through these changes without hurting people and losing volunteers. Please, please, worship leaders, make time to communicate with your techs!! We might have our own preferences, but we respect that you leaders are the ones with the final say. Most of us want feedback and want to improve our skills. Please just take a few minutes one-on-one with us, be straight with us, and tell us what you want. It could save months of frustration on both sides. We all have the same goal, to point people to God, so let go and trust us!
