Equipment Reviews

With the growing number of instruments that are being added to our worship services, the need for the electronic 88 key weighted piano has become more necessary to help with space problems. We recently purchased a Yamaha S90 for review and wanted to share the results with you.
First off, if you don't need a sequencer the S90 may not be for you. We wanted to get the most bang for our buck. We like it for the sounds, ease of use and it's great weighted action. The sequencer is a nice feature that may be needed at some point but for the pure pianist, it may be a waste. It is fairly light in weight and is easy to transport if needed. The design is thin and sleek and looks good. The display window is easy to read and fairly user friendly. Yamahas are usually difficult to navigate through but this unit is fairly easy.
Strengths:
Action and feel, sounds are good, ease of use, storage capabilities, good controller, midi capabilities, PC Serial Port Interface.
Weaknesses:
Sounds could be better.
Here is what Yamaha has to say:
Award-winning MOTIF8 sounds and 88 weighted keys in a portable package with no fat.
If you want fantastic sounds and finger-friendly keys but don't need a huge onboard CPU for sampling and workstation functions, this is your baby. Balanced, hammer-action weighted keys feel just like an acoustic piano, and an extremely simple interface lets you call up the 640 available voices including a 3-velocity-layer S700 stereo grand piano. 64-note polyphony with 115MB of AWM2 sample ROM. 128 performances, 50 mix templates, and 128 master programs. Polyphony, effects, and synthesis expansion via PLG boards. SmartMedia slot for storing voices and performances also permits playback directly from the card. Audio input lets you plug in a mic and use onboard effects. Includes SQ01 audio/midi sequencing software and voice editor for interfacing with your computer.

works for me
My S-90 has served me for about 2 years now. It has never let me down. Good enough sounds after editing them for proper use (no one uses factory presets...?). Easy to edit, fun to use and reliable on any gig or service. ...more

It is a good Synthe
Warren's comments are valid. This synthe does not have a full sequencer built in. The sequence is a software extra which comes with the synthe. If you want that you would need to get the workstation synthe like MOTIF ES or Korg TRITON. It does h...more
