Worship Muscians/Singers need to be skillful
Its always interesting to read articles/comments when dealing with the topic of "excellence" in Worship Arts. As a Music Pastor, I am responsible for helping our Worship Leaders serve our church with their musical talents and skills. Yes, we should not let striving for excellence become the focal point of our worship experience. But I have lost count of how many times I have heard Worship Leader's guitars play out of tune, or vocalists who are unable to sing/blend with one another. Why do some folks think this is ok? Lack of musical skill/ preparation distracts from the very reason why we sing/play for God... for His Glory. We should be leading people into His very presence. Not everyone who sings or plays an instrument should be placed in front of a congregation, just for the sake of it, or because they have been a member of their church for a long time. Yes, out of tune guitars, feedback squeals during a worship service, bad vocal pitch, has happened and will continue to happen until we are in the Lord's presence and we can worship Him fully and completely. But we, as singers/vocalists should never settle for 2nd best or desiring to improve our musical skills for the glory of the Lord. Excellence when done with Christ-like intentions, is good and brings glory to God.

Excellence for excellence sake?
I have to say that I disagree with several points in this article, but the one I disagree with the most is this idea of "excellence". As we know, man looks at the outward appearence, God looks at the heart. Worship done "badly" ie without obvious (what we humans call) "excellence", but with a heart totally and reverently devoted to glorifying God, has a much sweeter aroma to Him than one that is done excellently but without a reverential devotion. "Excellence" gets in the way of true worship in my opinion. I have seen many people with a heart for worship dismissed because they couldn't play or sing as well as somebody else who could, and I know that this grieves the Lord.

It's an interesting conundrum
we are called to worship God, and yet we are so completely unworthy to do so. I've found the most important form of preparation is prayer, because in reality only God can allow your worship to be acceptable to Him. it doesn't matter how good you are, because there's a gaping chasm between musical beauty and a worshipful heart. only God can purify your heart and open the hearts of all worshippers in the room. something else I've noticed is that one of the most important things you can do as a worship leader is to take away. there always seems to be a song or action that just isn't going to facilitate true worship, whether it's because you chose it outside of God's guidance or the Spirit leads you away from doing it when you get to that point of the worship service. we need to be looking to God and open to the leading of His Spirit during preparation and action and ready to change and bend to whatever He has, because in reality God is the only capable worship leader.

Leading Worship is a job?
When leading worship, we our providing a service for God. And I agree totally that we must do our best. But during worship, God want's us to lead others and not distract... so we have a commitment to God to try to lead EVERYONE ELSE into worship. Being a worship leader, I have to pay attention to everything that's going on - and it may not be totally worshiping/praising GOD, But it is all about leading the rest of the church toward praise/worship. So I've been teaching our teen worship team that our goal is to lead the congregation into worship.

It's sort of like the preacher reaching out to others to open their hearts to Christ. The preacher is not necessarily opening his own heart, that's not the goal. The goal is to open the hearts of others.

God wants us to do our best, and being on our knees 24/7 (at least mentally) and think about nothing BUT God, is not condusive to giving the best we have to give to God.

Another consideration, for believers praise/worship is something most of them understand. For non-believers, seekers (or teenagers), they may not know what to make of it. So that adds another level of complexity to the formula. We want to lead them into worship, but first we have to try to lead them to the Word!
