Before the throne of God
Aloha Steve, most of the opinions given so far refer to members on teams who cannot sing. So I would like to say that just because somone can sing does not mean they are able to lead worship. Too often people who can sing get carried away in their own abbility but do not enable the rest of us to worship...after all isn't that the job of the worship team...to enable the rest of us to come before the throne of God...not discounting our own responsibility in worship. Have a great day in the Lord...JOY

a call to lead
When I first began leading worship I extremely hesitant and very intimidated by the talents and abilities of those serving on the team. A very wise worship pastor mentored me and explained that it was my choice to stand in the authority that God has given leaders. This pastor gave me new language for my role of service. He asked me if I believed God had anointed and appointed me to be the "lead worshipper" at our church? Yes, I do believe that. No longer am I the worship leader . . . I am the lead worshipper. Guess what I have discovered? Through my role as lead worshipper God has given me the grace, mercy and wisdom to make the tough choices, speak the truth in love and worship Him every step of the way. Thanks for the article!! It is a great reminder that our role goes beyond the corporate time of worship!!

Thanks!
This is so true! I have been a Praise & Worship Pastor for about four years and inherited singers that just couldn't sing well or even harmonize. At times it seemed like I didn't have any BGV's and everyone was singing lead. Bottom line is, honesty is the best policy. I've learned that if you advise your team or whoever is having a problem with gelling or flowing with the team…you should speak to them 1:1 immediately. Remember, you are only doing them an injustice if you allow them to believe they really belong and they don't. I gave a team member harmonizing CD's to help her improve. About a few months, she advised me that she just didn't have the ability to learn and could see the team going in a different direction. Remember, when making the decisions of sitting someone down…prayer is very vital.

Praise Team
I don't think a person should be made part of the Praise Team just because they want to. Praise Teams/Worship Teams are there to prepare the congregation for worship service and someone singing off key is a distraction (to me)and to anyone that knows music. Let them be a part of the congregation. I would hand select the praise team, someone that will be there ready to serve, knows the words and music. I pull my team from the choir. Ad libbing is ok as long as the person is not trying to steal the show. Sometimes there are gaps in songs that need a little ad lib to help move the song along, so in moderation, it's alright, when it gets to the point that no one knows what is being sung, then talk to the person that is doing the ad libbing and tell them to "chill out" God Bless you all,

Question
Your article has been very helpful. It has answered a lot of my questions.I guess I tend to feel guilty saying no to someone who wants to join the praise team, but that really doesn't know how to sing. I don't want to discourage them. However, I do have a question: We have some singers in our praise team who really can't sing. How do I go about getting them off the team. Would you recomend an audition where everyone has to try out? My other question is: What do I do about singers who want to ad lib? There are some singers who love to ad lib - they love to be expressive in their worship. Then, there are other singers who don't like to hear each other ad lib because they feel it's distractive.

helpful
This was a helpful article. But, how does one go about determining if someone is called to the ministry of worship if they tell you it is so? Fruit? I have seen God use people who were not called, and produce fruit by His work through them.Sylvia
