Yep?
I think he did have a choice - His humanity demanded it. I also think that He *could* have called 10,000 angels - He is, after all, God. I think the whole point is that He chose to submit His earthly will to that of His Father's will, which He did throughout His life here on earth - another song talks about "His love held Him there." I think that's one reason why He wasn't already dead by the time they got Him to the cross - I can't imagine any man clothed in an earth suit being able to survive what He did....

He chose Life for us even though it meant his own death and resurrection
Jesus had the most agonizing choice a human being has ever had to make- to accept God's will that he go to the Cross and endure agony for human redemption, or to turn away spare himself.

We, as Christians all know what He ultimately chose- eternal life for us at his own expense (remember the GRACE acrostic? God's Riches at Christ's Expense). That is the choice Jesus made- he didn't have to, but he did- all he probably would have had to do to avoid the Cross would have been to recant his claim to Messiahship before the sanhedrin and plead for his life, but he knew that the purpose of His life was to be a living sacrifice for the sins of humankind- so he willingly endured the suffering of torture and the Cross.

The article, while well intentioned, is not very well-informed theologically. As Mel Gibson said (which I am not 100% sold on every aspect of the film, but applaud the courage to make it, and make it authentic and biblically accurate) "Read the Book- it's all in there."

Peace in the Lord,

Choice
I believe to say that Jesus did not have a choice really calls into question the garden scene. If Jesus did not have a choice, then why did he agonize over up coming events? If he had no choice, then what is the significance of the words, "If it's possible let this cup pass from me, but not my will, but thine." I believe that through this scene, we see how Jesus had captured the love of the Father, and how even at the own expense of his life, he was willing to be sacrifice that humanity needed. In saying that we as Christians are to be more like Jesus, we then also have the opportunity to follow God's will or to reject it. Thankfully we have an example to follow in Jesus, where no matter the cost, he followed!

Choice?
Actually, i believe it would be a violation of the Gospel if Jesus didn't have a choice. From the beginning in the garden of Eden, humans have been offered a choice. If we do not have a choice, then the Gospel is only humanistic. The choice is always to accept or refuse God's plan. If Jesus did not have a choice, then the incarnation was not real.
Did God have another plan? No. The plan depends on Jesus making the right choice.

Great Point!
I think it is so critical to understand that songs are powerful ways to convey messages -- and thereby to influence cultures...and our theology. So, no, I don't think it's splitting hairs to point out the difference. We so often look at the words of songs and take them as the Word.

I find it humorous yet sad that people quote the psalmist David as saying "God bless the child who's got his own" or "When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all He's done for me, my soul cries out 'hallelujah'" as though they are scipture.

Songs themselves take artistic liberties as are found in movies, books, etc. That is fine as long as it remains true to the actual message. No matter what the medium or creative license,it should draw us back to God. I hope that no matter what people saw in the movie, that it does cause them to ask and to seek and to find God for themselves in a new and personal way.
