Simple Faith

About nine months ago I came across an e-mail message that sparked my attention. It was from a guy who was looking for a place to share his gifts in sound and audio. It was a nice "coincidence" for me because I was looking for someone who would write sound articles for EXW. I contacted this gentleman and within a few weeks, I had received the first of several fantastic articles on sound. The man’s name is Leon Sievers. I knew nothing about him except he had a desire to serve the Lord through sound and audio.

As our relationship grew, I began to share with Leon our need for a new sound system for our church. He asked what we had in mind and I e-mailed him a list of the equipment we were looking to purchase. Upon his reviewing my list, he approached me with the idea of using his new technology in speakers in our worship center. I fancy myself as knowing a little about sound, but when he began to share with me the concept behind these speakers, it was above my head. The technology was new and it seemed impossible in my thinking.

There is something about Leon that set my mind and spirit at ease. Remember, I knew very little about him except he was a great writer of sound articles and a man who loves the Lord.

I committed to using his system in our church and told our other vendor that we decided to go another way. I had no idea how long it would take to get Leon's speakers. They were in the prototype stage and he was building our speakers from scratch. It was a big job to say the least. On top of everything else, we were in the process of moving into our gym for worship. We were in the middle of a remodel to transform our gym into a worship center. I needed to get my sound in place. I needed it soon!

God knew what to do. A friend in our community who provides sound for all the big concerts, offered to rent us a system for as long as we needed it...for a fraction of the cost. Call it what you will but we know what it was. God was in control.

Once the decision was made to go with this new technology, I began to get excited. I couldn't wait to see and hear these speakers. You see, we were the only church in the world that would have this technology. No one else has it. It was exciting to say the least. We set a projected date to receive and install the speakers. Things were good.

Leon and I kept in constant contact and he updated me with the progress weekly. As production began, we saw that the speakers were going to be delayed. Some parts that were needed failed to arrive in time. There was a halt in the building process. It would set us back a bit but not to worry, we had things covered.

Several events in our town required the system we were using to be removed from our worship center. It was always in place for worship but the moving made it difficult to tune the system from week to week. The pressure was on to get our new system in place. It was becoming quite a headache for me as worship leader and for our soundtech person. Something had to be done soon.

Again production was delayed. I had never been a part of something so new and so big. I truly didn't know what we were receiving. To me speakers are speakers. I trusted Leon when he stated these were incredible. He knew more about sound than I did. Yet, I really didn't know much about him.

Because of the delay, Leon offered to send us some equipment to keep us up and running until his speakers were finished. He also offered to get us our original speakers at his cost if we needed to move ahead. What should we do? I thought for about two seconds and said, "No, I’ll wait for your speaker.” It was a great opportunity to get out of this, and I could have moved ahead and had a system in place in a week or so. All the headaches would have been gone. I knew that Leon was a man of integrity. I believed that he would do what he said. I had faith he would provide us with an incredible system.

I made the decision to wait and we set a date for installation. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what we were getting.

Leon and Vahan arrived at the airport on a Saturday afternoon. I took them to their motel and we got back together later that evening to assess the facility and begin preparation for the installation. Upon entering the worship center, Leon performed his acoustic test. A big smile came across his face. The room he stepped into was our gym and we had converted it into our worship center. The acoustics in this room were less than ideal for any sound system, except this one.

We began unpackaging the speakers as we began assembling them. Wow! These were the most awesome speakers I had ever seen. Thin and black. They were amazing to look at. I lifted one of the speakers thinking I would need help...70 pounds apiece. That may not sound like much but these babies were rated for 4000 watts. I still had a hard time believing that these would produce a better sound than the stacks we were using. I had eight cabinets and eight horns. This speaker was the size of one of the cabinets and thinner than a hotspot.

It took us half a day to get the speakers in place. After hanging the first one we decided to fire it up. I was anxious to hear these speakers that I had waited on for months. When he put in a CD and cranked it up, I was blown away! Blown away is an understatement. These speakers produced a clearer, purer and sweeter sound that anything I had ever heard. On top of that, it was too small to push the 2000 watts we were pushing. As he raised the volume, my ears didn't hurt. There was no distortion at all. Every place I walked in line of the speaker was the same. It was the same at the front of the room as at the back. When I stepped out of the line of the speaker, the sound dissipated. It was as if the sound was thrown in a specific area for a specific area. I asked Leon about it. He said that was one of its functions and design. You could throw it to a specific section of an audience. The other amazing things was the amount of sound coming off the back walls. It was hard to detect it.

I could go on for hours of the technology of these speakers and yet only begin to scratch the surface. There is nothing like it out. They weigh less than any conventional speakers and produce tenfold the volume and clarity.

I still ask myself why I was given the opportunity to be the first in the world to have this technology. Why were we blessed to receive this before churches ten times our size? The answer was simple and yet I still can't believe it. God brought Leon and I together for a purpose. The bigger outcome is still to be found. However, I believed that he had something in his technology. I had faith in him as a person and friend. The first time I met him in person was when he came to install the system; and yet, it seemed as though we were old friends.

I don't consider myself a man of great faith. This was an act of simple faith that produced an incredible outcome for our church and myself. Our music is clearer and better than it could have ever been with conventional speakers. The spoken word is produced as clear as if you were standing next to the pastor. Our ability to do ministry and reach others for Christ has risen to a new level. Our worship is better than it has ever been. All because I met a man whom I had faith would produce what he promised.

"To God be the glory for the things he has done and continues to do to those who believe and have faith".
